Organize by Seasons
First, consider the season of the year because the temperature outside can make or break your motivation to start organizing. Believe me, it’s no fun organizing the garage in 90-degree heat.
What’s happening during a particular season of the year can make a difference too. Organize your office space and paper clutter at the beginning of each year so tax season won’t be overwhelming. Organize your entertaining spaces before the holidays and you’ll enjoy celebrating the season!
Second, take into account your season of life, what works for you now may not work for you next year. For example, I used to organize the family/playroom while the boys were at school. That way I could get rid of toys I knew they would never part with themselves. I always did this right before Christmas so we would have room for whatever new toys Santa would bring! Now, I organize the family/playroom in the summer, so they can help. That’s one of the things I love about this strategy, you can change it as your needs change.
Divide your home into zones
I have divided our home into four different zones. This allows us to focus on one zone each season. I labeled each zone based on what happened in that area. I named the four zones Entertaining, Working, Personal Living, and Outdoor. Here are the areas that are in each zone.
- Entertaining Zone- Entryways, Dining Room, Great room/Family room/Playroom
- Working Zone – Laundry, Office/Paper, Kitchen/Pantry
- Personal Living Zone – Bathrooms, Bedrooms, Closets
- Outdoor Zone – Porch/Patio, Garage/Shed, Car/Camper/Boat
ALLOCATE EACH ZONE TO A SEASON
Here’s what works best for us:
- Fall (September, October, November) – Entertaining Zone
- Winter (December, January, February) – Working Zone
- Spring (March, April, May) – Outdoor Zone
- Summer (June, July, August) – Personal Living Zone
During Fall, I like to organize the Entertaining zone. These are the spaces that guests see and spend time in when they visit your home. We have a lot of family and friends over during the holidays and this helps me prepare for them.
In the winter, when it’s cold outside, I tackle the working zone. I organize the laundry room in early December. It’s one of the smallest and easiest spaces to do in my home. Then, I take the rest of the month to enjoy the holidays! In the New Year, I am always excited to set new goals! On January 1, many people resolve to get their houses in order. It’s the best time to tackle, in my opinion, the two most difficult and time-consuming areas in the home. The kitchen and office.
During Spring, the weather starts to warm up and I am always excited to get outside. I feel very motivated to spruce up my porches and patio and make my outdoor living spaces inhabitable again! It’s a great time to organize the garage and to prep our cars and camper for travel!
In the summer, when it’s too hot to be working outside, I focus on our personal living spaces. The boys are home from college and they’re always thrilled to help organize their bedrooms, closets, and bathrooms!!!
