Steps to Organize Your Home In One Year
We’ll break down the job into manageable steps and then set goals to organize everything from stacks of clothes to piles of paper!
Get started organizing now and you can transform your entire home in one year!
Organize by Seasons
Consider the Season of the Year
First, consider the season of the year because the temperature outside can make or break your motivation to start organizing.
Believe me, it’s no fun organizing the garage in 90-degree heat.
What’s happening during a particular season of the year can make a difference too.
It just makes sense to organize your office space and paper clutter at the beginning of each year so tax season won’t be overwhelming.
Organize your entertaining spaces before the holidays so you can enjoy celebrating the season!
Consider Your Season of Life
Second, consider your season of life, what works for you now may not work for you next year.
For example, when our boys were young, I organized their bedrooms while they were at school.
That way I could get rid of toys I knew they would never part with.
I always did this right before Christmas so we would have room for whatever new toys Santa would bring!
Now, they are grown and organize their bedrooms in the summer while home from school.
That’s one of the things I love about this strategy, it can change as your needs change.
Divide your home into zones
I have divided our home into four zones.
This allows us to focus on one zone each season.
I labeled each zone based on what happened in that area.
I named the four zones Entertaining, Working, Personal Living, and Outdoor.
Here are the areas that are in each zone:
- Entertaining Zone- Entryways, Dining Room, Great room/Family room/Playroom
- Working Zone – Laundry, Office/Paper, Kitchen/Pantry
- Personal Living Zone – Bathrooms, Bedrooms, Closets
- Outdoor Zone – Porch/Patio, Garage/Shed, Car/Camper/Boat
ALLOCATE EACH ZONE TO A SEASON
Here’s what works best for us:
- Winter (December, January, February) – Working Zone
- Spring (March, April, May) – Outdoor Zone
- Summer (June, July, August) – Personal Living Zone
- Fall (September, October, November) – Entertaining Zone
Winter
In the winter, when it’s cold outside, I tackle the working zone.
However, during December we organize and prepare for the holidays!
Then, in the New Year, we tackle the kitchen and office.
Spring
During Spring, when the weather warms we are excited to get outside.
I feel very motivated to spruce up my porches and patio and make my outdoor living spaces inhabitable again!
It’s a great time to organize the garage and to prep our cars for travel!
Summer
In the summer, when it’s too hot to be working outside, we focus on our personal living spaces.
We organize the bedrooms, closets, and bathrooms!!!
Fall
During Fall we organize the Entertaining zone.
These are the spaces that guests see and spend time in when they visit your home.
We have a lot of family and friends over during the holidays and this helps me prepare for them.
