Let’s clear the clutter and make good use of this awkward space.
Below is a picture of what our cabinet looks like now!
The cabinet is not too messy, but I have been stashing gardening items under here, and I only want to store items I use in the kitchen in this space.
The system we’re using does not take advantage of all of the available space in this cabinet!
So first, use our 6/P Strategy to clear the clutter, and then use the four tips to take advantage of the space under the sink!
Let’s get organized!
6/P Strategy to organize under your kitchen sink
Do these six easy steps that start with the letter P!
1) PREP
Gather the following items:
- Trash bag
- Cardboard box
- Laundry hamper
2) PURGE
Remove all items from under the kitchen sink and place each in one of the following categories:
- Trash-Throw any broken or unwanted items in the trash bag
- Donate-place any items that you no longer use but are in great shape in the box to be donated
- Relocate-Place anything that doesn’t belong under the kitchen sink in the laundry hamper
- Replace- Place any items that need to stay under the sink on the counter or a table. Arrange items into categories.
3) POLISH
Please take this opportunity to clean the cabinet while it’s empty.
Consider lining the base of the cabinet to prevent watermarks or stains.
4) PERSONALIZE
It’s time to decide how you will organize this space.
Look at the categories of items that need to go back under the sink and decide how you will contain them.
We highly recommend using organizers to take advantage of the vertical space inside the cabinet!
If you are going to purchase new items, you need to measure the cabinet to make sure they fit.
Allocate specific sections for all of the categories of items you have.
5) PLACE
Now it’s time to place everything in its new spot!
- Trash-discard in your garbage can
- Donate- Don’t procrastinate, take items to your local donation center immediately!
- Relocate- take the laundry hamper and deliver items to the room they belong in.
- Replace-place every item in the spot you have found for it.
6) PUT BACK
Remember, if you don’t put each item back in its appropriate place after each use, you will end up with a cluttered mess again!!
4 Tips to use all of the space under The kitchen sink
Incorporate these four organization ideas to take advantage of the usable space under the kitchen sink!
1) Take advantage of vertical space
In front of the pipes, I had a large glass-lidded container to hold my dishwasher pods.
I removed it and replaced it with six clear storage drawers.
This takes advantage of the vertical space and allows me to store five more items in this area!
I added sponges, magic erasers, plastic gloves, wash clothes, and towels along with the dishwasher pods!
Now that’s a much better use of the space!
Use the doors
Remember to use the backs of your doors!
Install Command Hooks like we did to hold cleaning brushes.
You can attach small shelves to the backs of doors or use a basket hanging off the top.
Incorporate A Lazy Susan
A lazy Susan is great because it allows you to easily reach items placed on the board by spinning them around!
Ours was getting stained, so I added a matching cabinet liner to the top of it.
Don’t Leave Empty Spaces
When I finished, I still had a space behind the lazy Susan.
I decided to store paper towel rolls there!
Now, I will not have to walk to the laundry room for a roll of paper towels!
I had just enough room on the right side of the clear drawers to store my white dishwashing pan.
In conclusion
It feels great to have this project complete!

Great tips Donna, you sure have an organized cabinet. You are always so organized and give us so many helpful tips. I love the clear plastic piece, I have something like this for my makeup and it sure does help in keeping everything secured and in one place.
Donna Allen says
Thank you Cara! I love to organize stuff and usually buy one new storage solution for each room every year! Those clear, stackable, drawers are great! Thanks for stopping by!
Debby Morgado says
There is still some room I’d use under the Lazy Susan…..I guess I’m thinking about my space and I would definitely need to use every square inch available. Another plastic storage piece under the Lazy Susan would really help in my case but this is great….Love it! I’m motivated now to go do the same.
Donna Allen says
That’s a great idea! You can put two more drawers under the lazy Susan if you need more storage space. I actually tried that at first, but the drawers I have linked are a bit shorter than the lazy Susan. However, you can order longer ones. If I would have done that, I would not be able to store the paper towels behind. Good luck organizing under your sink!!
Dianne says
and where do you find those clear drawers, never saw them before
Donna Allen says
Hi Dianne! We ordered them from Amazon! There is an affiliate link to the ones we bought at the bottom of the post. Scroll down to the “Get the Look” section and it is the third blue link under the picture! If you click on the link and order something from Amazon we get a small commission at no extra cost to you! I hope that helps! I also use clear stackable drawers under my bathroom sink! Thanks and have a great day!
Kathi Bright says
What do you do with your garbage bags?
Donna Allen says
Hi Kathi! We store our garbage bags behind our trash can in the cabinet next to this one. Click here to see how we added pull out garbage and recycle cans and a hack for holding the garbage bags. Hope that helps!

This looks so good, Donna! We use a drawer system as well and it makes a big difference in keeping things neat and tidy. I love how you added the hooks for your brushes too. It’s such a great way to utilize the extra space. Hugs, CoCo

Thank you! I am loving those drawers and wish I would have added them sooner! Happy day!
