Transform your Halloween decor from simple to stunning with this DIY bat project that combines the affordability of Dollar Tree supplies with the elegant charm of Pottery Barn.
I’ve been looking at the Pottery Barn website for inspiration for my Halloween decor.

I’m not into scary and they have super cute decorations!
The picture below is from their website.
Note- Pottery Barn showcases these bats in several pictures on their website but does not have them for sale.
So imagine how excited I was to find a bat at Dollar Tree that looked the same size and shape as I had seen on the PB website!
I instantly knew I could make one that looked as good as theirs!
You’re not going to believe this transformation!
Here’s the before and after picture.
The bat on the top is from Dollar Tree and the bat on the bottom is my Pottery Barn dupe!
Isn’t that amazing?
I think I like mine better than the Pottery Barn version!
Are you ready to craft a sophisticated Halloween bat that looks like it belongs in a high-end catalog—all while keeping costs low?
Let me show you how!
Steps to Create a DIY Halloween Bat
Gather Materials
Gather the following materials to complete this project:
- Dollar Tree bat
- Black macrame jute cord- Hobby Lobby
- Hot glue gun
- Hot glue sticks
- Silicon finger protectors
- Scissors
- Optional- tweezers
Deconstruct the bat
- Remove black tinsel from the center of the body.
- Pull the purple sections away from the back of the bat and discard them.
- Cut the plastic rings off the top and bottom of the bat.
- Cut off the three tabs sticking out the bottom.
Clean the frame
- Remove the hot glue and tinsel stuck to the frame.
- I used my fingernails but you can use tweezers instead.
Cover the body with twine
- Attach the twine to the back of the spider with hot glue.
- Wrap the twine around the bottom section.
- When you get to the wings, glue the twine back and forth across the entire body.
- Now wrap the twine around one ear until none of the tabs show.
- Add a dab of hot glue to the backside so the ear can’t unravel.
- Wrap the remaining ear.
Wrap the Wings
- .Wrap the twine around the wings moving in different directions until you get the coverage you like.
- I occasionally added a drop of hot glue to the tips of the wing so the twine could not unravel.
- When you have the coverage you like, wrap the remaining wing.
- Cut the twine and knot it on the backside.
Isn’t this the cutest bat you’ve ever seen?
I propped him up on a black plate holder and he looks like he has legs!
Display Your bat
Now it’s time to display your bat!
Or bats!!
You all know me and one cute bat was not enough.
I had to make a set and add two more.
Here they are hanging in my kitchen!
I decorate one area of our home for Halloween and this year, it will be the dining room.
But I’m also considering decorating our porch for Halloween too!
Stay tuned to find out where they end up!
Conclusion
This bat project proves you don’t need to break the bank to achieve a stylish, festive look.
With just a few simple materials, you can turn an ordinary Dollar Tree bat find into a DIY Halloween decoration worthy of Pottery Barn.
So, grab your glue gun and get crafting—because a little effort goes a long way in creating something truly magical!

Great job Donna. Bats remind me swimming in our pool at night when we were kids.. Bats would fly around and I’d go inside.
Donna Allen says
I like my bat much better than the real thing, lol, I would have gone inside too! Thanks for stopping by!
Rachel @ The Antiqued Journey says
Super cute bats!! I’m not one for Halloween decorations but these are subdued enough and would look totally cute hanging out on a porch! Great job, Donna!
Donna Allen says
Thanks Rachel! We’re not big on Halloween either but we’ll be home this year, so I’m wanting to decorate the porch a little! Not sure if the bats will end up out there or in the dining room!

I agree with you Donna, I do like your bats more than Pottery Barn! These are so adorable and look easy to make. I love the way you hung them in the kitchen, the place most overlooked when decorating for the holidays (in my opinion). I do not usually decorate for Halloween, but I have been told I should be thinking about it. Have a wonderful week my friend!
Donna Allen says
Thanks so much Cara! I don’t have much Halloween decor, so I usually only decorate one space. I’m thinking I might add the porch this year though! We’ll see!
CoCo says
Oh my word, Donna, these are super cute! I would have never thought to use the form and then wrap them in twine. That is totally genius! As you know, 2 of my nephews are obsessed with Spooky Season and they will love these. Big hugs, CoCo

Thanks a bunch! I think they turned out super cute too! They would be perfect for your Spooky soiree!
