Are you struggling to find a good way to store board games in your house? Are your boxes worn out, allowing small pieces to get lost? I’m so excited because I’ve found a fabulous way to organize board games!
You might think it sounds strange, but I’m going to transfer our board games out of their torn-up boxes, and into storage bags!

Believe it or not, it’s a great solution!
I ordered these interesting bags from Amazon!
They are a zippered pouch made from mesh and plastic that is very durable and waterproof.
The size is 16.9 X 12 inches, so most of our games fit inside them.
We only had a couple that would not fit!
Let me show you where we store our board games now.
They are somewhat organized inside this black cabinet in our loft.
It doesn’t look too bad at first glance, but when you look closer, there are several problems with the boxes.
Why you should organize board games into bags
Boxes are not the ideal way to organize board games!
First, the boxes are usually a lot larger than the board games themselves, and take up a lot of space!
Transferring the games to bags will save tremendously on storage space.
Second, most people stack boxes on shelves to store them. This works ok if all the boxes are the same size.
Unfortunately, games come in all different shapes and sizes making it difficult to stack them.
It also makes it hard to pull out the game that’s on the bottom of the stack!
Bags change all that because you store them like files.
This makes it easy to see and retrieve the game you want to play!
Finally, the biggest problem with boxes is that they don’t hold up over time!
If your games get a lot of use, they end up like the picture above.
As you can see, we tried taping the edges of the boxes, but that ripped over time!
Even the games in metal boxes got beat up!
No idea how this got so many dents in it!
I don’t remember the boys throwing the games at each other. lol!
Thank goodness I found a better solution!
I can’t wait to try the bags!
So let’s get this project started!
Gather
You will need to gather or purchase the items below:
- Board games
- Tape measure
- Storage bags
- Scissors
- Packing tape
- Zip-lock bags
- Rubberbands
- Baskets
Steps to Organize Board Games into bags
1) Purge
Remove all of the board games and stack similar items together.
For example, I put all of our card games in one pile.
Then, I put all of the dice games together.
These items are small, so I plan to put all of the decks of cards into one bag!
2) Measure
Measure first, before you purchase any type of storage container.
Take the game out of the box and measure the contents to be sure they will fit inside the storage bags.
I only bought the large bags, but you can purchase smaller ones if you have a lot of small games.
If you want to store the bags inside a cabinet, measure first to make sure they will fit.
These bags will not fit inside my small black cabinet, so I am going to store them in the baskets that are currently holding the toys on the bookshelf.
3) Order bags
Order the size and number of bags you need to organize your board games.
4) organize Game pieces
Organize the contents of each box!
Put loose game pieces in a zippered sandwich or snack-size bag.
Use rubber bands to keep stacks of cards together.
5)label
Cut one of the sides off of the box to make a label.
Tape the name/label onto the bag with clear packing tape.
Adhere the label to the bag before you put the game inside.
6) put the game in the bag
Transfer the contents of the game to the bag!
7) Store Bags
The bags fit perfectly in the baskets I already had!
I like how they stand up like a file so you can easily read the name on the bag!
I was able to fit nine board games into one basket!
Here’s a look at the organized shelves!
And look how much better the inside of my cabinet looks!
I bought three black storage cubes from Walmart to put the toys that were previously in the large baskets!
I’m so happy with my new storage solution!
Do you have a bunch of beat-up board games that could use a little love?
I highly recommend you try this and organize your board games in bags!

I wish I would have had this setup when the boys were younger! I don’t think we would have lost so many little pieces of the games if they had been zipped up in the bags! Take care, Donna

This is such a smart way to organize your games. One of the barriers to us playing games is the hassle involved in getting them out. This would make it supper easy!
Donna Allen says
The bags provide easy access to the games! This set up is so much better than how we had it before! So far, I’m very pleased with this system!
Kearll says
what do you do if game has large/long board?
Donna Allen says
We only kept one game that would not fit in the bag, and we store it in it’s original box, inside our cabinet. Fortunately the rest of our games did fit inside the bags!! Have a great day!
