Have you ever had an item in your home that was functional but didn’t match your décor, so it just looked strange??? Well, that was the case with a large whiteboard we purchased when our kids were little. We hung it in our great room and I wrote our weekly schedule on it, so they would know what we would be doing each day (sorry no picture, it was a long time ago). It looked very out of place in our great room, so I decided to dress it up with a frame. It made it look more like a piece of art than something that would be hanging in someone’s office. Fast forward to today and now I’m using that same whiteboard in my office. Problem is, it does not match, so I’m going to show you how to update a whiteboard to match your decor!

ADD A FRAME
PAINT THE FRAME
I chose to use black, white, and gold as the color scheme in my office. The frame around the whiteboard is gold but the gray walls in my office made it look more bronze. I also never liked the fact that the board had a silver edge around it and black plastic corners that the frame did not cover. I thought it would look better if the silver edge was black, so I decided to use a black sharpie marker on it.
The black edge made it look better and made me realize that I wanted to paint the whole frame black to match it. So, chalk paint here we come!
How I painted the frame
Prep
Gather the following items for this DIY project: Dropcloth, plastic or cardboard to put the frame on Tack cloth Painters tape Chalk paint Paintbrush Paint key Stir stick Wax Wax brush Lint-free paper towels
Get started
1) Place the frame and whiteboard on a large piece of cardboard to protect the surface you’re working on.
2) Clean the frame with the tack cloth to remove dirt and dust
3) Apply painter’s tape to make sure paint does not get on the whiteboard.
Paint
4) Paint the frame with chalk paint. I chose to use Annie Sloan paint in Graphite. Unfortunately, after it dried, it looked very dark gray, not black.
I went to Home Depot and purchased Behr Chalk decorative paint in Classic Noir and let it dry. I liked it much better.
5) Paint a second coat and let dry.
It looked so much better but from a distance, it looked flat and I missed seeing all of the detail around the frame. So, I decided to antique it with white wax.
Wax
6) Apply a thin coat of wax to a small area.
7) Wipe off the wax using a lint-free paper towel. Start rubbing gently and if you want to remove more wax, press a bit more firmly.
The wax brought out the detail of the frame and gave it an older, antiqued look.
Add a seasonal touch
I added this cute banner that I made to add a bit of seasonal decor to the office. I guess these are the only snowflakes I’ll be seeing in Florida this winter! Of course, I made them black and gold to match the rest of the room!
I think it looks so much better than before! I hope it has inspired you to update a whiteboard to match your decor! This will also work with a chalkboard or a corkboard.
