Since we will have company over the 4th of July, I decided to decorate my dining room table for the patriotic occasion.
Unfortunately, I have two problems.
First, I don’t have any home decor for this holiday.
Second, I don’t want to buy any new items!
That means I have to get creative!!
To solve the problem, I’m going to shop at my house.
ITEMS I HAD ON HAND
Fortunately, I had some red, white, and blue items I made years ago to decorate the tables when my boys received their Eagle Scout awards.
Yes, that’s right, all three of our boys are Eagle Scouts.
I am so incredibly proud of them.
Here is a picture of the centerpieces I made for the tables.
I couldn’t stand to throw them away, even though I had no plans to do anything with them.
Anyway, I pulled the red, white, and blue items I had stored in a box and tried to figure out how to incorporate them into a tablescape.
I had several small flags and three different sizes of stars on sticks.
I had a lot of red and white shredded paper filler.
six steps to Create a patriotic table
Here are six easy steps to follow when planning a tablescape!
1. Protect the table
The first thing you need to decide when planning your tablescape is how you want to protect the table.
Possibilities include a tablecloth, table runner, placemats, chargers, coasters, or a combination of these items.
Since I was going with a red, white, and blue theme I decided to use white placemats.
I removed six large stars from their sticks to use as coasters.
I think they look so cute!
But the best thing is, I don’t have to worry about heat or water spots on the table.
2. Create a CENTERPIECE
I chose a white pitcher to put my stars and flags in.
The shredded paper worked great to hold the sticks in place!
When shopping at my house, I found two small cake plates with red bases and placed a red candle on each one.
I made “nests” with the white shredded paper to add interest!
3. Choose Plates
I don’t have any red or blue plates and white blended into the placemats.
So, I went with black and chose not to use a salad plate.
I like the simplicity, and the colors pop against the black!
4. Pick Glasses
In the previous Eagle Scout ceremony picture, I used a mason jar to hold the centerpiece.
I wanted to use the mason jars as glasses, but they were too big.
They covered the star “coasters” and were too bulky to hold in my hand.
So instead, I had to use my everyday glasses.
5. Decide on Utensils
I decided to use a fork and knife only, no spoons this time!
6. choose Napkins
To stay within my color scheme, I had to choose between white cloth napkins or red paper napkins.
The red paper napkins won out!
Plus, this is such a casual tablescape that paper napkins seem more appropriate!
Well, there you have it!
I can’t believe I pulled it off!
I was able to create a patriotic table for the 4th of July without spending a penny!!
