Most of these ideas will work in any size closet.
If you don’t have a cleaning, linen, or bathroom closet, consider using the ideas in a cabinet or on shelves.
Hopefully, these closet organization ideas will inspire you, no matter what size space you have!
Best closet ideas to organize clothes
Keep shoes off the floor
Put a shoe organizer on the back of your closet door.
Hang a shoe organizer from the closet rod.
Hang similar types of clothes in sections
Divide your clothes by type and hang them in sections.
If you have a large closet, you can separate the sections.
Switch to matching hangers
When your budget allows, switch to thin matching hangers.
Thinner hangers save space and add visual appeal to the closet.
Invest in specialty hangers
If you have a lot of accessories like belts, scarves, or ties consider buying hangers made specifically to store them.
Store least used items on shelves
Use fabric cubes to store items you don’t use regularly, like out-of-season clothes or hand-me-downs.
install hanging shelves
If you don’t have a dresser and want to store folded clothes in your closet, purchase hanging shelves.
This particular one has extra storage on the sides!
Don’t leave any unused vertical space
If your closet only has one rod to hang clothes, figure out how you can use the space underneath.
A great use of this space is pull-out drawers and/or a laundry basket.
Best ways to store cleaning supplies in a closet
Create a cleaning caddy
Store all your household cleaning supplies in a container that’s easy to carry from room to room!
Use fabric cubes for storage
Fabric storage cubes are budget-friendly, come in different sizes, and have many colors and designs!
They’re perfect for storing our lightbulbs.
Consider pull-out drawers
Plastic pull-out drawers are wonderful for containing small items.
However, there is one downside to using drawers on a shelf.
If the contents are heavy, the drawer could tip over.
We solved that problem by storing an open tool kit on our shelves!
We didn’t want to be able to see what was inside, so we added paper to the front.
Contain similar items in baskets
We keep all of our car wash supplies in one basket which can be carried outdoors when we need it!
The other gray basket contains our backstock of cleaning products.
The white basket below contains dusting clothes.
Label bins if you can’t see inside them
Be sure to label your bins so everyone in your household will be able to find things.
In this closet, we used chalkboard labels that stick on the drawers, and metal label holders that hang over the edge of a container.
Take advantage of crates with wheels
If you are going to store items on the floor of a closet, consider purchasing crates with wheels so you can have easy access to the items inside.
This will allow you to keep the closet floor clean!
Don’t forget to use the vertical space
Use the walls to hang brooms or mops.
If your shelves don’t allow you to hang items on the wall, use the back of the door instead!
Best advice for linen closet Storage
Contain Sheet Sets
Store sheet sets separately in baskets or plastic containers.
If your budget is tight and you can’t purchase containers to store your sheet sets, fold them and place the sheets inside the pillowcase!
label containers by size
Be sure to label what size sheet sets you have.
We used our Cricut to make labels.
You can also use a label maker or purchase labels that will stick to the container.
Provide a dust-free environment for linens
If you have extra pillows and blankets for guests consider storing them in plastic so they don’t get dusty!
Best tips for bathroom closet Organization
Store Toilet paper in an open basket
Store toilet paper in an open basket so it’s easy to see and access.
Neatly fold towels
Neatly fold or roll your towels based on the amount of space you have.
Store Beach Towles in a basket with wheels
We store our beach towels in this amazing basket with wheels.
When we have guests that want to go to the pool, we just roll it out and let them take their pick!
Incorporate different sizes of cube storage
By now, you’ve probably figured out that one of our favorite organizing items for closets is fabric bins, but we also love the smaller weaved cubes!
Not only are they functional but they look great.
We store haircutting equipment, travel toiletry bags, linens for the primary bedroom, and mani/pedi equipment in these storage cubes.

Carol Karl | Living a Real Life says
This is such a great post. Lots of good information. Question – do the shoe hangers on the back of the door bang when you open and close it? I have one really bad cupboard in my house which needs to be tended to. It’s full of little jars of herbs, etc for herbal remedies and skincare. I have tried all different kinds of ways to organise it but the truth is that I need to get in there and have a good clear out before I can truly organise it. You just may have inspired me to do that! Thank you.

Hi Carol! So glad our post inspired you! Sometimes the shoe bag will bang when you close the door. If that bothers you, use velcro strips that are sticky on the back side. Adhere one to the closet and the other to the bottom of the bag and then stick them together. Good luck organizing and let me know if you have any other questions.

So many fabulous ideas for home organization and efficiency, Donna! We have almost all of these in place and they work really well for us. I was just telling someone the other day how creating systems is one of the biggest things that helped to change our home for the better. It’s not that it never gets messy, but when it does we know exactly what to do and where to put things immediately which has been a total game changer! Hugs and thanks for all these amazing ideas, CoCo

I completely agree CoCo! Having a “home” for all of your belongings is truly a game-changer and makes life so much easier! Thanks for stopping by!

You always have such wonderful ideas for organization Donna. I joke I will someday have all organized closets… again, someday. LOL. I think we need more closets, or maybe I need less stuff. Yeah, I am betting that is it. I’m off to give this a go.

You’re so funny Cara! I think the majority of us have way more stuff than we actually need! I hope our post helps give you ideas on how to organize your closets! Let me know how it goes!
